I can be sceptical about celebrity make-up brands. Promises of bold claims and familiar philosophies wrapped up with a shiny new bow mean I often side step a new launch for fear of disappointment.
So, when Selena Gomez’s make-up brand, Rare Beauty, made its way across the pond earlier this year, it totally passed me by.
Then, I heard rumblings of an eyeliner that delivered the perfect winged flick without the work of a pro MUA by your side; a liquid blusher with so much pigment it lasts the entire day; and more recently, a tinted moisturiser so innovative it went viral on TikTok almost instantaneously, racking up five-star reviews on SpaceNK thereafter.
I decided it was time to give Rare Beauty a go.
So what is Rare Beauty all about?
Again, this is not your average celebrity beauty brand. Created by singer and actress, Selena Gomez, Rare Beauty was born out of a desire to dismantle unrealistic perceptions of beauty.
So far so good, right? But Gomez actually stays true to her word. Not only are the formulations created with everyone in mind, the feel-good blushers, weightless foundations and glosses are a celebration of make-up – not a tool to cover up what makes you unique.
As for the products themselves, the hype on TikTok speaks for itself – it’s almost impossible to ignore the rave reviews, with claims from TikTokers hailing the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush ‘the best blusher ever’, and fellow influencers proclaiming the brand as ‘the new Glossier’.

What are Rare Beauty’s best make-up products?
I decided the best way to see if the products really stack up was by testing TikTok’s favourite formulas. That would be the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, Positive Light Tinted Moisturiser, Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner, Positive Light Liquid Luminizer and Perfect Strokes Universal Volumising Mascara.
Here’s how I got on when I tried them all for the first time.
Soft Pinch Liquid Blush
I am a cream blusher devotee through and through so when I swatched the formula on my hand for the first time, I wasn’t sure if it was me. The texture is more matte than dewy but the pigment is really something. You need a tiny dab on the apple of your cheeks for an instant flush of colour. And, unlike my beloved cream formulas, I noticed that it stayed put for a lot longer, too.
Positive Light Tinted Moisturiser
Taking TikTok by storm, this tinted moisturiser has over 77 million views on the Gen-Z platform despite only launching a couple of weeks ago. I used my fingers to apply; it was easy to blend and felt hydrating on my skin – no caking or creases, just one very glow-y base.
This actually felt a little heavier than my go-to base (Erborian CC Crème, looking at you) offering a decent amount of coverage while still letting my skin breathe.
Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner
This is the star of the show in my opinion. I’ve become pretty lazy when it comes to eyeliner and this was a breeze to apply. In a matter of seconds, I was able to create a perfect eyeliner flick that was symmetrical on both sides (a feat of science, no?) and a look that did not budge all day. We can thank the unique precision tip for that, which comes inspired by a Japanese caligraphy brush.
Positive Light Liquid Luminizer
Working as a skincare-makeup hybrid, this highlighter added a dewy glow to my cheekbones. The finish was a little too pearlescent for me but I liked that the formula felt weightless and hydrating on my skin. Like the blusher, it didn’t budge all day, which is a massive bonus, too.
Perfect Strokes Universal Volumising Mascara
Another winning innovation. I’m not a fan of overly volumisimg mascaras that tend to clump lashes with loads of formula rather than fan them out. This one, though, lengthened and separated each and every lash giving a volumsing effect without the common side effects of clumping. It didn’t smudge under my eyes either. Win.
It can be easy to put celebrity beauty brands in the same box but this one is truly a rarity in a very saturated market. When it comes to price point, unique formulas and products your make-up bag actually needs, it wins on all accounts.
