Overusing certain skincare products can damage your skin, according to skin expert Michelle Macken

Active ingredients are the ingredients contained within skincare products that actually work to address the skin concern the product is meant to target.

They are the ingredients that have been scientifically proven to actually have the desired effect, meaning the product will do what it says it will. These include retinol, AHAs, BHAs and Vitamin C.

While it’s tempting to use these products all the time because they’re the ones that will make the big difference in our routine, overusing them can do way more harm than good.

Your skin barrier is the first layer of your skin and it’s there to protect what’s underneath. Skincare expert and Ultraceuticals educator Michelle Macken has explained everything we need to know about it and how to protect it.

Michelle told RSVP Live: “Your moisture barrier provides critical protection for your skin.

“This is your front line of defence for skin, it keeps the good things in, such as hydration and moisture, and it keeps the bad things out, such as pollutant stress, irritants and allergens.

“It’s really important that we respect our skin barrier and be gentle with it. You don’t want to overload or over-exfoliate your skin because that can cause an impaired skin barrier.”

There are a few steps you can take to make sure you’re looking after your skin barrier.

“Gently cleanse it with a PH balanced cleanser,” advised Michelle. “That won’t leave the skin leaving tight – all Ultraceuticals cleansers are PH balanced. If someone has more sensitive skin, I’d recommend the Ultra B2 Micellar Solution.

“It’s also really important that you hydrate and restore your skin. The Ultraceuticals moisturising range are really good because they contain ingredients that mimic what we should have naturally in the skin. Our skin should have ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol to keep our skin lovely and hydrated.

“Everybody also needs to protect the skin with an antioxidant complex and an SPF.”
